Jakarta (Antara Babel) - Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla is scheduled to lead a funeral ceremony for Hasyim Muzadi, a prominent ulema who passed away on Thursday.

The funeral will be held at the Al Hikam boarding school, Depok, Husain Abdullah, a spokesman of the vice president, stated, here, Thursday.

"The late Muzadi was a great ulema and a very close friend of Kalla. The demise of Muzadi is a great loss to Kalla and the people of the nation, who loved and respected the ulema," Abdullah noted.

In January 2017, Kalla had visited Muzadi in a hospital.  

Kalla expressed his deep condolences. Muzadi was a moderate ulema and a role model for other Muslims, according to the vice president.  

A member of the Presidential Advisory Board K.H. Hasyim Muzadi died on Thursday morning in his residence in the complex of an Islamic boarding school of Al Hikam, in Malang.

The body would be flown to Jakarta for burial at the Al Hikam boarding school in Depok.

Born on August 8, 1944, Muzadi died after receiving intensive treatment at the Lavalette Hospital and at his house in Malang, East Java, over the past several days.

Muzadi was the former chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the country's largest Islamic organization.
