Prabowo assures continued aid for NTT earthquake victims

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto assured residents affected by the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara that the government would continue monitoring conditions and sending aid as the death toll reached 103.

"The central government continues to monitor the situation and take steps to send aid and prepare everything needed to address these difficulties," Prabowo said while checking on earthquake survivors in Nagekeo District, East Nusa Tenggara, on Wednesday.

Prabowo said the government had prepared temporary measures to reopen schools as soon as possible, with classes expected to be held in tents until damaged buildings are deemed safe.

"We have prepared temporary measures so schools can reopen soon. For safety, schools may initially use tents," he said.

Prabowo urged residents to remain patient during the post-earthquake response. Based on assessments by experts, conditions are expected to become safe in a maximum of about three weeks.

"According to our experts, we need to be patient. It may take a maximum of about three more weeks before it is safe," he said.

Once conditions are declared safe, the government will begin building temporary housing and repairing homes affected by the earthquake.

Prabowo said the government would not leave affected residents to face the disaster alone and would continue providing assistance.

"Believe me, the government will not leave you alone. We are here, and we will continue to help you," he said.

Prabowo also expressed condolences to residents who lost family members in the earthquake.

"I extend my condolences to all the people of Flores and the areas affected by the disaster, especially those who have lost family members," he said.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded 103 deaths as of Tuesday (Aug. 25) following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Nagekeo district, East Nusa Tenggara, at 5:58 a.m. local time on Saturday (Aug. 15).
