Muntok, Bangka Belitung (Antara Babel) - The administration of West Bangka district, Bangka Belitung province, has established cooperation with the Dutch government to develop the historical potential of Muntok as an Indonesian heritage city.
"The cooperation, established with the Dutch government and the Indonesian Diaspora Network in The Hague, is part of the district administration's commitment to revive the glory of Muntok," spokesperson of West Bangka district administration Dipa Pandu Putratama said here on Wednesday.
He explained that Muntok, is a 283-year-old city with a lot of economic potential. Its main commodities are tin and white pepper.
Additionally, Muntok is rich in its artistic and cultural heritage. It was the place where the first Indonesian president, Soekarno, stayed in exile, as also where Indonesian independence heroes stayed in 1948-1949.
"The area, located in the west end of Bangka island, also features a history that dates back to the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial period. The administration wants to revive the glory of Muntok in the future," he said.
According to Dipa, on November 3, 2015, the head of West Bangka administration signed a memorandum of cooperation with the government of the Netherlands and the Indonesian Network Diaspora in The Hague.
"Through this pact, the district administration seeks to build partnerships with all parties, including the Indonesian Network Diaspora in the Netherlands," he said.
He hoped that this cooperation will restore Muntok's glory as one of the major cities in Indonesia.
