Jakarta (Antara Babel) - President Joko Widodo stated that all the
leaders of the IORA member countries have committed to create a safe and
peaceful region.
"All the leaders want to create a secure and peaceful region in the Indian Ocean," Widodo said, at a joint press conference with South African President Jacob Zuma and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull after concluding the IORA Summit in Jakarta, on Tuesday.
The president added that the leaders of the IORA member countries also have a strong commitment to respect international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, which is referred as a global constitution to regulate the ocean.
"A safe and peaceful Indian Ocean is the basis for the development of other fields," he stated.
The IORA Summit 2017 produces the Jakarta Concord that contains the IORA states commitment to promote security and maritime safety, enhance cooperation in trade and investment, advance the development and management of sustainable and responsible fisheries, strengthen disaster risk management, strengthen cooperation on academic and science, and promote cooperation on tourism and culture.
"In addition to these areas of cooperation, the leaders also encourage IORA cooperation on blue economy, women empowerment, good governance, eradication of corruption, and human rights," the president remarked.
