Sungailiat, Bangka-Belitung (Antara Babel) - Bangka District Head Tarmizi Saat noted that the current floods hitting several areas in Bangka District, Bangka-Belitung Province, have been caused by the imbalance in the natural ecosystem.
"Environmental damage, heavy downpours and strong currents of rivers have triggered these floods, while the river basin areas are no longer functioning," Tarmizi pointed out here, on Thursday.
In addition to strong currents, silting of rivers also causes floods, he added, urging local inhabitants to not throw wastes in rivers nor cut trees since trees can help absorb water.
Several parts of Indonesia are currently being hit by floods.
In Bangka District, Sinar Jaya is the worst hit by floods; floods here have damaged houses, roads and bridges.
Floods have also affected some other parts of Sumatra Islands, including several villages in North Musirawas, South Sumatra, since several days now.
The flash floods triggered by incessant heavy rains submerged three sub-districts: Rawas Ilir, Karang Dapo, and Rupit, reported Sunardin, a spokesman of the North Musirawas sub-district administration, here on Wednesday.
Over the past few days, flooding has also occurred in Indonesia's capital city of Jakarta on Java Island as a result of nonstop heavy rains during the on-going rainy season.
