Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung (Antaranews Babel) - White pepper originating from Bangka Belitung (Babel) Islands Province is of best quality in the world, according to the National Committee For Economy and Industry of the Republic of Indonesia (KEIN-RI).
"In terms of quality, Babel's pepper is the best and the most sought after in the world market," Head of the Food, Agriculture, and Forestry Industry of KEIN-RI Benny Pasaribu stated here on Friday.
He added that KEIN-RI has helped restore the glory of Babel`s white pepper under the brand "Muntok White Pepper" in the world market.
"We hope the marketing of farmers' white pepper is not based on market mechanism. Hence, the government needs to guide the farmers in marketing their pepper commodities," he said.
According to Pasaribu, planting white pepper in Babel has become a cultural heritage passed down by the ancestors. Pepper plantations need to be encouraged by the government and administrations through coaching, training, providing quality seeds and fertilizer assistance, and marketing.
Meanwhile, Babel Governor Erzaldi Rosman Djohan expressed gratitude to KEIN-RI for paying a visit to observe first-hand the plantation and management of white pepper in the province.
"I am pleased and proud that KEIN visited us, and we hope that a central government policy will be put in place to restore the glory of white pepper in this area," he emphasized.
Djohan added that the superiority of Babel`s white pepper was its level of spiciness of between six to seven percent and is different from those produced in other provinces and countries.
"Our pepper has a high level of spiciness, in contrast to those grown in Kalimantan, Makassar, and Vietnam having only 2.9 to three percent," he added.
