Nunukan, N Kalimantan (Antara Babel) - The Indonesian Navy has deplored the Malaysian maritime police for arresting some Indonesian fishermen who had ventured into the country's territorial waters on February 15.

"Some 11 fishermen, who farm seaweed, have not been released until now," Commander of Nunukan Naval Base Lt. Col. Imam Hidayat, said here on Saturday.

He pointed out that the residents of Nunukan had entered the Malaysian waters on orders from their employer, who is a Malaysian citizen.

Hidayat questioned the arrest of the fishermen because seaweed farming in the region had been going on for five years.

"Why did the Malaysian maritime police arrest the fishermen now when seaweed farming in the region began five years ago?" he remarked.

The Royal Government of Malaysia had, in fact, given its verbal assent to the activity.

Hidayat further noted that the fishermen, who were released by the Malaysian maritime police, are now required to pay them a sum of money.

"Based on what the fishermen said, they are required to pay a setoran (sum of money) to the Malaysian maritime police to farm seaweed," he stated.
