Jakarta (Antara Babel) - President Joko Widodo stated that all the
leaders of the IORA member countries have committed to create a safe and
peaceful region.
"All the leaders want to create a secure and peaceful region in the
Indian Ocean," Widodo said, at a joint press conference with South
African President Jacob Zuma and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm
Turnbull after concluding the IORA Summit in Jakarta, on Tuesday.
The president added that the leaders of the IORA member countries
also have a strong commitment to respect international law, including
the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, which
is referred as a global constitution to regulate the ocean.
"A safe and peaceful Indian Ocean is the basis for the development of other fields," he stated.
The IORA Summit 2017 produces the Jakarta Concord that contains the
IORA states commitment to promote security and maritime safety, enhance
cooperation in trade and investment, advance the development and
management of sustainable and responsible fisheries, strengthen disaster
risk management, strengthen cooperation on academic and science, and
promote cooperation on tourism and culture.
"In addition to these areas of cooperation, the leaders also
encourage IORA cooperation on blue economy, women empowerment, good
governance, eradication of corruption, and human rights," the president
remarked.
